There was a knock at the dressing room door and Madonna stood to answer it, still clad in the black morning suit, a carnation in her lapel. The hall was a hive of activity – producers, technical crew hurrying past – but for a single point of serenity.

Kylie stood outside, sequined gown glinting under fluorescent lights, dripping with diamonds. "I'm always the bridesmaid, never the bride," she said archly of Madonna's earlier onstage performance.
